‘Big Brother’ Shakeup: CBS Show Reportedly Planning Major Format Changes

- Big Brother producers are reportedly planning major format changes for Season 28 in response to fan complaints about influencer-heavy casting and lackluster gameplay.
- The new season may feature a mix of veteran and new houseguests, with casting rumors fueled by hints from press releases and social media posts by host Julie Chen Moonves.
- Producers aim to cast memorable personalities, including both beloved and controversial veterans, to create more drama and excitement, though final casting decisions are not yet confirmed.
Get ready for a huge summer for Big Brother! The producers are reportedly planning major format changes after fans have voiced complaints about too many houseguests being influencers and not enough actually playing the game.
According to The U.S. Sun, producers want this season to “disrupt the entire franchise in a good way.” Sources close to the production claim that CBS executives want to bring in a mix of veterans and newbies.
“They know viewers have been frustrated with influencer recruits and gameplay that feels too polished and careful now,” a source told the outlet.
The last time the cast was all veteran players was Season 22. Before that, it was Season 7. In between that, past houseguests have returned with new houseguests mixed in. They have played as coaches, pairs, and came in under twists.
In Season 27, fan-favorite Rachel Reilly came back to the house in a twist as the only veteran player. She then left by a twist as well, but that’s still a sour subject, so let’s move on.
Production wants “people who already know how to play hard, make big moves, stir drama and create moments fans actually remember.” Houseguests from recent seasons have reportedly been contacted, and they include Season 23’s Derek Xiao, Season 26 America’s Favorite Player Tucker Des Lauriers, and Season 27’s Morgan Pope. The show wants “beloved veterans” and “controversial figures who will divide the fandom.”
“They don’t necessarily want an easy, universally-loved cast. They want personalities that get people talking online, too,” the insider told The U.S. Sun.
However, the source warned that “nothing is official until the cameras start rolling.” Casting is reportedly far from finalized and could shift dramatically before the Season 28 premiere on July 9, which is set to be a 90-minute episode.
‘Big Brother: Unlocked’ Returning With New Element
The rumors of the returnee season started when fans noticed that the press release for Season 28 did not list “all new houseguests entering the game” for the first time since Season 22. It simply said “houseguests.” Even with Reilly’s appearance last year, the other 16 houseguests were all newbies, and it was marketed as that.
Rumors ran even more rampant when host Julie Chen Moonves shared an Instagram post about Big Brother with eight former houseguests and eight emojis. This led fans to believe that half of the house could be veterans, while the other half would be new.
If the rumors are true, who would you love to see return to the house? Or would you rather have an all-new cast? Let us know in the comments.
Big Brother, Season 28, premieres Thursday, July 9, 8/7c, CBS
