TLC’s Unexpected gave viewers some shocking moments (who can forget Unexpected‘s McKayla Adkins, who went through three seasons on the show documenting her young motherhood journey?), but what happened to one of the most polarizing couples, Jason Korpi and Kylen Smith? Jason was only 18 and Kylen was only 17 when they first appeared on Unexpected season 5 back in 2022, pregnant with their first baby. Jason and Kylen made an impact, but it wasn’t for positive reasons.

Kylen, a shy young woman, and her parents, Michael and Marie, appeared helpless and maybe a little bit afraid of Jason as they navigated her pregnancy. Their relationship was incredibly disturbing to watch, but made for compelling television. Jason’s parents had zero control of their son, even though they appeared to disapprove of his immature, destructive ways. Even casual viewers of Unexpected have very strong opinions on Kylen and Jason’s storyline.

Viewers watched uncomfortably as Kylen was slowly isolated from her family and taken under Jason’s control. It was disturbing on many levels, and fans hoped that Kylen would leave Jason because they considered their relationship to be potentially abusive. The couple did not return for Unexpected season 6.

There have been some terrible fathers and partners featured on reality television, but Jason has to be high up on one of the list of least desirable. At only 18, Jason had a know-it-all attitude, and things had to go his way or else. One of his most egregious acts concerned Kylen’s labor with their first child, a son named Xavier.

Jason first insisted that Kylen give birth at home, since he felt that he wouldn’t have as much attention (and control) if she gave birth in a hospital.

When the decision was made to have the baby in a hospital, Jason decided that he didn’t want Kylen to have an epidural. To the disgust of all of the medical personnel, Jason caused such a scene that he was removed from the hospital, leaving Kylen to go through labor alone. Jason, of course, blamed Kylen for him getting kicked out of the hospital. Kylen was young, vulnerable, and completely under Jason’s control. It was a recipe for disaster, and nobody appeared able to stop it.

After their season of Unexpected aired, Kylen and Jason appeared to go off the grid. The backlash against their appearance was likely wearing on the young couple. They reemerged recently to reveal that they’d welcomed another child, a daughter named Oakley Renae, in October 2024, as shared by the Instagram account, The TLC Unexpected. The account shared three photos, the first of Kylen and her son, Xavier, gazing at the new baby, the second of what appears to be Kylen, Jason and the kids, and the third, a close-up of baby Oakley.

Commenters on the post expressed concern for Kylen and her kids’ well-being. A user named ariheartsu wrote, “Yikes…. those poor babies. I don’t know how no one got her away from Jason after the show aired. Everyone failed her and these precious babies,” while another, brie51389, commented, “I’m currently watching the first birth and as [a] healthcare worker and as someone who can’t stand a man like that, I think I would have lost my job that day. I would have become security and not needed to call them… .”

Kylen and Jason both have public Instagram profiles, but neither have been active since 2022. Still, we know she recently gave birth, so it’s safe to assume they are still together. On TikTok, Jason has a public profile, but he’s not very active on that account, either. His attitude, however, appears to still need adjusting, as his TikTok bio reads, “Haters stay mad,” and he posted several videos in 2023 that are still defiant about the way he was portrayed on television.
