Soap fans are once again set to have their evenings disrupted as Coronation Street and Emmerdale are set to be taken off air next month.

Instead of the episodes that would usually air on Friday, June 5, ITV1 viewers will be met with coverage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier as England take on Spain.

It is as yet unknown whether the instalments of Emmerdale and Corrie thatwould normally have aired at 8pm and 8.30pm respectively will be rescheduled for the weekend – something that has been done a few times already this year.

Since ITV’s major schedule shake-up in the new year, our beloved soaps have faced countless disruptions to make space for coverage of sports events.

This is something that Metro readers have felt very strongly about in the past, with some even calling for soaps to have their own channel to avoid these changes.

Last year, ITV announced that it would be cutting down on the output of episodes from both Corrie and Emmerdale, with each soap now airing 30-minute instalments every weeknight, creating what has been dubbed a ‘soap power hour’.

To kick off the new schedules, characters from the cobbles and the Dales teamed up in an epic soap crossover, aptly titled Corriedale, which had viewers tuning in in their millions.

The aftermath of the events of Corriedale is still playing out in both soaps, and there’s still plenty of drama to come before the changes on June 5.

On the cobbles, the investigation into Theo Silverton’s killer is still underway, as a new suspect enters the frame.

Elsewhere, Will Driscoll (Lucas Hodgson-Wale) continues to struggle in the aftermath of his ordeal with Megan Walsh (Beth Nixon), and newcomer Idris Nazir (Junade Khan) immediately makes an enemy.

Across the Pennines, Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) finds himself on the wrong side of a police cell door, which doesn’t go down well with wife Moira (Natalie J Robb).

Meanwhile, the farm falls victim to yet another arson attack, and Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) sets her sights on bad-boy Ross Barton (Michael Parr).
