High Potential Season 2 Teases One Morgan Story Missing From Season 1

While High Potential season 1 didn’t explore Morgan’s past and backstory in a lot of detail, one promised plot in season 2 of the comedic mystery series promises to fix this oversight. An adaptation of the French crime comedy series HPI, High Potential sees Kaitlin Olson’s unassuming cleaner begin working with the Los Angeles Police Department thanks to her unusually high IQ.

The Mystery Series Will Explain Why The Couple Split Up

In High Potential writer Rob Thomas’s earlier show Veronica Mars, the titular heroine’s backstory was central to season 1 of the series. It was the entire reason she got involved in solving crimes, and it shaped her first major character arc in the noir-influenced teen drama. In contrast, High Potential season 1 only offered viewers vague glimpses of Morgan’s origins.

The daily life of Olson’s character, and the way that it dramatically changed after she started working with the LAPD, was the real thrust of the story. As such, High Potential didn’t have much room to explore Morgan’s backstory, even though her relationship with her children’s father, Ludo, did imply that there was an interesting past there.

The two co-parents had an affable camaraderie between them and moments of romantic frisson, which is enough to make viewers wonder why things didn’t work out between them. Per the showrunner, “I think the audience has a real appetite to find out what really happened. What was it like the day they sat down and had a conversation about what wasn’t working?”

High Potential’s Morgan/Ludo Flashbacks Can Finally Flesh Out Morgan’s Story

Speaking to Gold Derby, High Potential show runner Todd Harthan admitted that season 2 would explore Ludo and Morgan’s past further since fans were interested in what happened to their relationship. Fortunately, these flashbacks could serve a double function while answering this mystery.

While viewers don’t necessarily need to know why Ludo and Morgan broke up, these flashbacks could flesh out Morgan’s pre-High Potential life and show viewers who she was before the unit discovered her “potential.” This is something viewers don’t get with murder of the week episodes, where the focus on the mystery draws attention away from Morgan’s character.

Although High Potential and Psych have a lot in common, the latter series notably began many episodes with flashbacks to the childhood of its hero, explaining how he developed his almost supernatural powers of deduction. In contrast, High Potential hasn’t fleshed out Morgan’s backstory so far, giving season 2 a perfect opportunity.
